On this one, we were doing a full depth repair. The plan was to remove 13” of pavement and base material. We planned to put in 10” of recycled concrete and 3” of hot mix asphalt. After removing the pavement and base we found very soft and saturated sub-base. At this point we had to address this new issue. What we did was to mix portland cement into the soft base material, drying it and stabilizing it so that it would support the weight of the trucks and equipment as we placed the 10” of recycled rock. We placed a geotextile fabric over the stabilized sub-base prior to placing the rock, then placed and compacted the 10” of stone. Once we were happy with the stone base, we were ready to pave. The project was 3” of hot mix which we placed in two 1.5” lifts. This makes for a smoother final wearing surface than paving in one lift.
